James Otis Kaler (1848 - 1912) was an American author and journalist who produced over 175 novels. He was born in Frankfort, Maine - now called Winterport. He worked for the Boston Journal as a teenager and went on to work for numerous other newspapers in New York. At one point, he even worked as a publicity man for a circus, which no doubt was the source for his book, "Toby Tyler or Ten Weeks with the Circus". He wrote under the pen name James Otis. Although this may have been intended for a younger audience when it was published in 1920, "The Minute Boys of Boston" gives us all a rare glimpse into what it must have been like for young boys to participate in the Revolutionary War. Here is a little glimpse of the book "I only spoke of that to show you what the Minute Boys may be called upon to do. As a matter of course, we will be under the command of others, and bound to set our hands to whatsoever work is found for us." Seth did not appear very eager to take advantage of this opportunity to serve the colony. He stood there as if chewing it over in his mind until I said with somewhat of impatience, and no little hope that he might finally refuse "If the idea does not seem good to you there is no reason why you may not refuse to join us.
